Show Detailed Itinerary

The small town of Clarens is situated at the foothill of the Maloti Mountain and is known as the Jewel of the Eastern Free State because of its breathtaking beauty and dramatic surroundings. It is no wonder the town is an artist haven and a hideout for creative people to gain inspiration. But Clarens is more than just a pretty place. It is also the ideal getaway for those looking for something a little deeper than the usual attractions. Though the town officially stands at a population of 6000 people, it boasts countless more experiences and must-sees.

The town was established in 1912 and is named after the town in Switzerland where Paul Kruger was exiled. It is a small artistic town with a variety of art galleries that host a consistent flow of strong art inspired by the surrounding landscapes and the town’s atmosphere. The natural backdrops can be taken home on the countless canvases that one can pick up in the town’s many galleries.

After a short five-minute drive from town we find the communities of Kanana, Masakeng, Phahameng (meaning On top in Sesotho) and Kgubetswana (meaning Basotho culture in Sotho). Our first stop is at Masakeng, an area where herding is still a visible part of life and where our guide tells us about the vital role livestock plays in the community. The herdsmen are a cherished part of the community and provide an invaluable service that helps maintain the livestock and this longstanding way of life. Our guide reveals how locals still associate livestock with wealth, even though many of us may think of this as a practice exclusive to rural South Africa. We then stop off at a local spaza shop where we buy refreshments and to get a taste of Spykos, or local takeaway.

We then head to Kgubetswana, a small near-rural settlement down the road from Clarens. Much like its neighbour Kgubetswana is a must-see for anyone who has a passion for art and is interested in street art. The community boasts several murals, which people on the street can appreciate freely. Our guide, Eddie introduces us to a few local artists and shows us a mural outside his home that one of his friends painted. Eddie believes that the mural and the spray painted art on homes and spaza shops adds colour and hope to a place where many of Clarens’ residents live, most of whom don’t have access to the artworks hanging in the galleries in town.

Whether it’s strolling down the Main Road taking in the sites, sounds and souvenirs of Clarens or going off the beaten track, this is a town brimming with beauty and creativity. This is a pilgrimage any art lover should do as often as possible.
