The Ribola Art Route in Mbhokota, near Elim, Limpopo, is an expression of the African spirit that brings together Tsonga, Venda and Shangaan cultures. The Ribola Art Route invites you to celebrate the eclectic rhythm of Limpopo through the sights and sounds of this out-of-the-ordinary community. The experience culminates in a homestay with a local family that will host you overnight.

Meet the beat makers

Upon meeting the dynamic teacher, musician and sculptor, Lucky Ntimani at the Tinyiko Art Centre, you will join him and his students in dance and song. Get first-hand experience of the creative ways in which his students male music from uniquely carved drums, marimbas, mbiras and a novel instrument made out of upside-down tin plates on the springs of an old chair.

A mover and shaper

At Pilato Bulala's home-studio in Tshivuyuni Village you will witness an artistic genius at work. Guests will get an intimate look into the working process of the artist and what it takes to make his sculptures made from old pieces of scrap metal, which he has cleverly named, “Scraptures”.

A moving soul-session

Later as the sun begins to take its leave from the sky, you will head to the Vutsila Mountain Art School, home of sculptor, musician and teacher, Thomas Kubayi for a musical soul-session under the spreading Marula Tree. Here you will enjoy the ancient rhythms and the sunset sessions led by the talented musicians, Gift Mkhari and Kenny Nonyana. It’ll be near impossible to sit still as the music swirls around you - you’re more than encouraged to join in on the festivities. The night will conclude on a high note with traditional beer and sundowners made with a traditional twist.
