Show Detailed Itinerary

Cape Town is a cultural melting pot and there’s no better place to discover the diversity South Africa has to offer than in the Mother City. The 5 Day Cape Cultural Tour is the ideal gateway to this cosmopolitan city. Visit the South African National Heritage site, Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned, learn about the community of District Six and discover many more memorable moments.

Day 1: Molo

You’re greeted and welcomed at the airport. You will then be taken to the 5 star Saltycrax Backpackers in Blouberg. As the saying goes, “Location, location, location.” Salty Crax couldn’t have chosen theirs any better; the hostel is within walking distance from a variety of bars and restaurants, the beach, shops and transport terminals.

The day’s yours to capture some great views of Table Mountain, sip a cocktail, get lunch or take a stroll on the beach. Blouberg is also famous for kitesurfing and other water sports.

In the evening a traditional South African meal is cooked over the fire – this will either be a braai (barbecue) or a Potjiekos (slow cooked stew). This is a great opportunity to meet new people from around the world.

Day 2: Getting from A-Z

After breakfast a friendly Saltycrax Staff member will give you a brief lesson on how to use Cape Town’s public transport. They will accompany you by bus to the Cape Town city centre. You will get a bus card with enough credit for your whole journey. You can choose between one of two options: a walking tour or a hop on hop off bus tour.

Day 3: Life in Mzansi

After breakfast at Saltycrax you can explore the wealth of culture, the historical development of our townships and get a sense of what everyday life entails for the residents of the city’s townships. This is a must for anyone who wants an authentic view of South African life.

After spending the morning in the local townships, take the ferry from the Mandela Gateway at the V&A Waterfront to Robben Island. Ex-inmates guide the tours and recount their experiences and hardships while imprisoned on the island.

Highlights include a visit to District Six (with the option to visit the museum), a tour of Langa township, Via Bonteheuwel township, Gugulethu township, and Khayelitsha township.

Day 4: Night on the town

In the evening take a cab down to Richard’s Bistro and enjoy a 3 course buffet dinner while being entertained by a an exciting new musical show directed by the award winning director Basil Appollis.

Day 5: Cape Malay community

The final day gives you the opportunity to learn about the Bo-kaap area and the Cape Muslim people who have historically lived in this neighbourhood. The focus on this day is on the South-East Asian heritage of the community, their culture, and food. The mini shopping experience, makes stops at a local spice shop and halaal butcher. The shop-keeper himself, when available, or our knowledgeable guide, will take you behind the counter to taste, smell and touch your way through typical ingredients. The tour is a true sensory delight and allows visitors to taste, smell and touch various items throughout the day.

Highlights include a hands-on cooking session in to visit a local family’s home before sharing in a full traditional lunch.
