Show Detailed Itinerary

Limpopo is a culturally rich area where history, ancient customs and rituals collide for a fascinating experience. Immerse yourself in the wealth of experiences Limpopo has to offer over the course of two days.

Day 1: Ancient rituals and mysticism

At 2:30pm you’ll arrive and check into Baleni Camp. Once you’re settled you’ll kick-start your stay with a visit to the hot springs of Kamkhulu. After a therapeutic soak you will head to Soutini Village to visit the Salt Pans. This is where you’ll learn about the 2000 year old process of collecting salt from the local women. At 5:30 you’ll return to the camp where the Mbombhela dance troupe will perform a Xibelani, central to the Xitsonga Cultural heartbeat. This will be followed by a traditional home-cooked meal. At 7:30pm the day’s activities come to an official end and guests can take their leave. Enjoy a well-earned night in the camps traditional African huts, which have been given modern flourishes.

Day 2: Two generations of know-how

Your day gets off to an early start with a 7am breakfast at Baleni Camp. After a leisurely breakfast you’ll check out of Baleni camp at 9am. At 10-11am you’ll visit a traditional healer in Giyani. Ma Chavalala, one of the highest-ranking traditional healers in the country will share her knowledge about the art of divination and ancient African healing techniques. Richard Mavunda, a historian and cultural guide, will follow this up with a tour of the area’s ancient trade routes. Alternatively, you can sign up for the energizing sounds of the Makomba Ndlela singers and dancers. At lunchtime you will stop off at a roadside restaurant where you will eat as the locals do. If you’d like to extend your Giyani stay by another evening you can check into the locally owned and managed Xisaka Lodge or Vahlavi Lodges nearby.
