The Fietas Museum, a non-profit entity, was established by community member, Salma Patel, because of the desperate need of a development initiative to uplift our impoverished community of Pageview, and to create job opportunities, particularly for women in the area.
The museum opened in September 2013 and is supported by the City of Johannesburg as a public heritage site and is located in a building in the former historic Indian bazaar of Fourteenth Street, the economic hub of the community.
Fietas Museum collaborates with their heritage partner, Sophiatown Heritage and Cultural Centre (SHCC) in promoting authentic heritage experiences in Fietas and Sophiatown, linking to a route including Soweto, Lenasia, Fordsburg, Newclare and Westbury (part of the western areas removal history).
Patel, born resident of Pageview, among others, actively resisted ‘forced removal’ from her home in Pageview, where they living for generations. Their home is the last remaining intact building in Fourteenth Street, a recognised blue plaque sight, an important historical and cultural resource that serves as a reminder of the destruction of Pageview, which was one of the major crimes of the apartheid era.
Patel holds Bachelor of Arts degree and BA (Hons) in Development Studies.
