Lebo is an entrepreneur who was born and raised in Soweto. His vision is to play a contributing role in growing Soweto into a community where numerous educational, employment and entrepreneurial opportunities exist for the Sowetan youth, using tourism as a vehicle to achieve this.
Lebo’s journey began in 1999 when he would welcome tourists into his family home when tourism was still a fledgling industry in the township. At the time he sold crafts next to the Hector Peterson memorial. It was then that he chose to harness his entrepreneurial skills by expanding his client offerings from crafts to selling postcards, posters and t-shirts about Soweto.
Following this, in 2003 he decided to turn his family home into Lebo's Soweto Backpackers, enabling visitors to spend the night and have a more extended experience of Soweto’s beautiful vibe, instead of only spending a few hours. A few years later, he started the now popular Soweto Bicycle Tours taking people out of their cars and on to the streets of Soweto. He currently also offers Tuk-Tuk and walking tours of Soweto.
Lebo is a true testament that perseverance and hard work are key factors to realising your vision. He now spends most of his time mentoring youth within Soweto and has established a soccer team aimed at getting youth involved in sport.'
