Show Detailed Itinerary

The creative spirit of Limpopo is an unparalleled mix of vibrant artistry that blends the different shades of Tsonga, Venda and Shangaan cultures in the province. The Ribola Art Route invites you to experience the wondrous showcase of the community’s expressiveness and talent. The experience culminates in an overnight stay with a local family.

A colourful start

Your morning gets off to an inspiring start with a short drive to Mbhokota Village. Once you arrive at Twananani Textiles, Ma Florence will teach you about the long history of textiles in the community ranging from colourful cloths, pillowcases and traditional clothing. You will also have the opportunity to get your hands dirty and learn the art of textile design in an interactive lesson.

Mad about pots

At Mukondeni Pot Village Sarah Munyai, who has taught the women of the village to make clay pots in the age-old fire pit tradition, will welcome you with open arms. You too will learn how to make the pots, platters, vases, and water filters decorated with traditional patterns and symbols using ochre and graphite collected from the Luonde Mountains. What you make will be yours to take home and remember the village with.

Hands-on creative workshops

En route to the next creative workshop you’ll stop off for a mouth-watering lunch at a roadside restaurant. You’ll have a choice between two workshops after lunch: either the home-gallery of Patrick Manyike where you’ll learn how to carve from this master sculptor OR the jewelry-workshop of Phyllis Movani where you’ll make your own unique jewelry and traditional Tsonga dolls to take home as souvenirs.

Soak up the sunset

After an inspiring afternoon you’ll head to Shiluvari Lakeside Lodge on a scenic ride marked by spectacular views of the mountains. At the Albassini Dam you’ll set off on a sunset cruise. Samson Mulaudzi, your guide is knowledgable in both wildlife and birdlife, and is invaluable company on the cruise. Further up-stream you’ll come across hippo and will enjoy sundowners and snacks to the resounding call of Fish Eagle. Sundowners will be followed by dinner at the Shiluvari Lakeside Lodge.
